The Coaching Habit Book Club Challenge starts NOW!

How it Works

For ten years, The Coaching Habit has helped over a million people listen a little longer, rush to advice a little less, and show up more fully for the humans around them. Wouldn’t it be great if we all got just a little bit better at that?

Here’s your chance to make that happen. And  here’s how we’ll help. We made 16 different Book Club Guides. Yes, 16! There’s a theme for any kind of club you can imagine, even one for the club you design yourself.

The Sixteen Club Types

Choose Your Theme

The Intergenerational Club

Different generations, one book. Grandparents and grandkids, parents and adult children, mentors and mentees, students and teachers. What each generation sees in these questions surprises the others. That’s exactly the point.

The Unlikely Colleagues Club

Not your usual team. People from across the org who wouldn’t normally be in the same room. What happens to curiosity when a group drops the hierarchy? This club finds out.

The Leadership Team Club

The whole leadership team reads it at once. The most structured guide and the most dangerous one. A group can’t pretend after they’ve done it together.

The Parents Club

For parents, caregivers, and anyone raising the next generation of humans. The book club that makes you think about the questions you ask at home as much as at work. Also runs well as a Moms Group or Dads Group — whatever your crew looks like.

The Classic Book Club

Your existing club with its rhythm, its snack rotation, and its strong opinions. This guide fits right in and asks the questions your usual selections never do.

The Bookstore Club

Hosted at a local independent, open to whoever walks in. A club built from people who all showed up for the same book.

The Young Professionals Club

Early career, figuring out how to lead without the title yet. This club is for the group that has everything to gain from these questions.

The Listening Club

For groups who heard it, not read it. Built for audio listeners, with a special intro recorded by MBS just for this club.

The Remote Team Club

A club without a room. Async-friendly, designed for the reality of Slack threads and thirty-minute Zooms across time zones.

The Solopreneur & Small Business Club

Founders and freelancers who want the club experience without the corporate context. Still managing humans, clients, and their own advice monster. Just in a smaller org.

The Night Out Club

Dress up a little. Pick somewhere good. The book is the excuse — the evening is the point.

The Neighbourly Club

The people across the street. The ones you wave at. Time to actually talk.

The Summer Reads Club

The beach. The lake. The porch. One book worth reading slowly.

The “I Don’t Do Book Clubs” Club

For people who are absolutely, definitely not interested in book clubs. And yet, here you are.

The Mini Club

You and one other person. That’s it. That’s the whole club.

The AWE Club

And What Else? The catch-all. Define your own club type, name it, and send us a photo. The Hedonists Club, the Advice Monsters Club, the “We Read This at 3am” Club — whatever you’ve got, this is your category.

Did someone say win?

It wouldn’t be a challenge without a prize at the end. We’re giving away up to 10 seats in my Bring Out Their Best live course (that’s about a $7K value).

Submit your club’s answer to Question #7 of the 7 Essential Questions by August 19th
for your chance to win! We’re running two more cycles this year: Cycle 1 closes August 19. Cycle 2 closes October 5. Cycle 3 closes December 31, 2026.

What Readers Say

The tools in this book have helped me as a parent, a husband, and a friend

I am genuinely impressed with how simple and effective this book is… This is NOT just for business; the tools this book have helped me as a parent, a husband, and a friend. It’s amazing what can happen when we stop trying to be the wellspring of knowledge with all the answers and shift into truly caring about helping someone arrive at their own conclusions.

Two Questions from this Book Achieved More in 15 Minutes than 3 Years of Therapy

Two Questions from this Book Achieved More in 15 Minutes than 3 Years of Therapy… I then asked her ‘And what else?’ And then the real gems appeared… I’m neither a psychologist or a psychotherapist. Come to think of it, I’m not a qualified coach either. You don’t have to be with this book.

It has revolutionized my approach to leadership.

I’ve owned “The Coaching Habit” for over a year now, and I can confidently say it has revolutionized my approach to leadership. Michael Bungay Stanier offers practical, actionable advice that has made a significant difference in my coaching style. The seven essential questions laid out in the book are game-changers—they not only encourage deeper conversations but also empower my team to think critically and independently.

What I love most is the focus on simplicity and clarity. Stanier’s engaging writing style makes it easy to understand and implement the concepts, even for someone who may not consider themselves a natural coach. The emphasis on asking questions rather than providing answers has allowed me to foster a culture of growth and exploration within my team.

In the past year, I’ve noticed a marked improvement in team dynamics and individual accountability. This book isn’t just a read; it’s a toolkit for lasting change. I highly recommend “The Coaching Habit” to anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills and create a more engaged and empowered team. Five stars all the way!

This book will transform your team, your org, and you!

I bought and read this book 2 years ago and it hasn’t left my side since. “The Coaching Habit” by Michael Bungay Stanier offers a refreshing perspective on leadership and coaching. Recommended by a colleague in the coaching field, this book provides valuable insights for professionals seeking to enhance their leadership skills.

Stanier’s approach centers on seven essential coaching questions, a seemingly straightforward concept that proves remarkably powerful in practice. The third question, “What’s the real challenge here for you?” stands out as particularly impactful. It serves as a crucial reminder that surface issues often mask deeper challenges, encouraging coaches to delve beyond initial presentations.

The book’s principles demonstrate impressive versatility. I’ve coached senior executuves all over the world, appling Stanier’s methods across diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. The results were consistently positive, yielding customized, impactful coaching conversations that transcended cultural and experiential differences.

“The Coaching Habit” reinforces the fundamental importance of asking insightful questions and listening attentively to responses. It also provides the framework to pose more challenging, tactical questions such as, “If you say yes to this, what are you saying no to?” This approach often leads to significant breakthroughs in coaching sessions.

The book’s teachings are widely applicable, benefiting anyone in a leadership role or those who regularly interact with others in professional settings. Stanier’s writing style, while professional, remains engaging and accessible.

I’m grateful that I bought this book

This is an excellent book if you’d like to improve your communication and leadership skills. I love how simple and direct the the writing is. It is outlined well to help the reader remember and implement what you are learning. I learned a lot and found great value; For that, I’m grateful that I bought this book.

This is THE BOOK for Coaching

This is it. Look no further. It breaks it down into some really simple questions. I’ve been using these techniques now for several years. This works 1:1 and with groups (with some adjustments and extra guiding). I work in corrections. We’re problem-solvers. This book helps us not be, and allows you to put the solving back on the person with the problem. It’s genius. MBS is also hilarious and that humor carries throughout the text. Buy this.

Want to learn patience

This book I found after watching a tictok about patience and how to become a better listener. The speaker suggested this book. I ordered it and read it. Seems to be geared toward management and listening better but you can apply that to your partner and children too.

I’m learning how to be a better listener rather than shutting down or speaking over. I suggest it. Its a good read and I think we all can be better for ourselves, right?
