Find New Spells

My spell books for coaching x parents.

If you’ve come this far, you may be hearing the call, or maybe a whisper, or maybe a whisper of a whisper, that there’s a new role in an exciting story waiting for you.

What’s on offer is not just a new adventure, but a new version of you. Your growing and learning and evolving isn’t done yet.

As wise and as messy and as complex as you are right now, there’s more to do, and there’s more to be.

If you’re up for this journey, you might find you need new spells.

When I think back to my Dungeons & Dragons days, I remember when you levelled up as a wizard or a cleric or a druid, you got access to new spells. More XPs (experience points) meant more capacity, more nuance, more understanding.

We’ve all got spells we weave right now. And it’s fun casting the spells we’ve mastered.

But, new role, new adventure … most likely these old spells are no longer sufficient.

I don’t know this to be true, but I imagine that when you’re learning new spells, you have to be bad at them before you’re good.

And, let’s face it, that’s annoying.

We’re all old enough to be good at a lot of things now, and who wants to go back to being “consciously incompetent”?

But the very point of the new role and story and conflict is to grow

You reached the end of the old story and your old way of being.

Now, to bring out your best, you need to be a student, with the humility and uncertainty that come with it.

I’m curious to know: What do you feel you need to learn?

I know for me right now, I need to learn not to step into the role of teacher (so comfortable and familiar for me), but to stay in the role of the student. Very meta, I know.

One of the spells I’m casting is simply to keep reminding myself that I am an apprentice. The point is to learn, not to lead (yet).

I’m seeking new mentors, in person, courses, and books. And, perhaps most importantly, I’m carving out time in my calendar to be consciously incompetent, to learn, and to cast new spells, so that I don’t fill the space with the stuff that comes easy to me.
If there are places you are learning and new spells you are casting, it will be nice to travel that path with you (perhaps inside The Conspiracy? Doors open next Tuesday.).
